Istvan's father was jailed and sentenced to life when Istvan was 3. He was then the Director of IBM Hungary, an American company and, for that reason, was considered a spy. The rest of the family were deported to a Hungarian village.  He was freed, with other Hungarian political refugees in October 1956, during the uprising. 

Fearing new reprisals, the Sandorfi family abandoned Hungary when Ist-van was 8. He said that «he had had the privilege» ofliving traumatic events. It is what made hím an artist, his first drawings being dated winter 1956. This is the photo taken in the refugee camp in Vienna after a long clandestine escape.
